GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief, the Battalion Chief manages the activities and operations of one or more sections within the department (i.e. administration, training, operations, logistics, special operations, volunteer liaison, privacy officer, etc.); within assigned areas, ensure compliance with local, state and federal guidelines; plans, organizes, and directs multi-company operations at emergency incidents and planned events; and provides general and complex assistance to the Director of Fire & EMS (Chief) and Deputy Chief.

- Volunteer Fire and EMS Staff, as assigned
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Meet performance standards established with direct supervisor.
- Manage the organization, staffing, and operational activities of assigned bureaus and programs; and participate in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for assigned areas.
- Create and implement innovative services for assigned areas; monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of services; identify opportunities for improvement; and manage the implementation of changes.
- Assist with the selection of personnel; mentor, direct, supervise and evaluate assigned personnel; counsel, commend or discipline personnel as appropriate.
- Assist in the development and administration of the assigned budget; forecast additional funds needed; and assist in the monitoring and approval of expenditures.
- Coordinate assigned services and activities with those in other departments, divisions, and outside agencies and organizations; representing the department at public functions.
- Respond to emergency incidents and planned events; assume the duties and responsibilities of the Incident Commander, Command Staff, and/or ICS General Staff as appropriate.
- Resolve difficult inquiries and complaints; investigate complaints and implement or recommend corrective action as appropriate.
- Provide staff assistance to the Director of Fire and EMS (Chief); prepare and present reports and other necessary correspondence.
- Represent the department and the city and exercise decision-making authority at meetings.
- May temporarily assume the duties and responsibilities of the Deputy Chief or Director of Fire & EMS (Chief).
- Manage department staffing software for accuracy, efficiency, and minimum staffing requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Associate Degree in fire science, emergency management, public administration, business administration or a closely related field. Bachelor's degree is preferred.
- Five (5) years full-time fire and EMS related experience.
- 3 years of full-time command staff experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to develop and administer a comprehensive emergency management program.
- Ability to work with other departments, and other agencies.
- Ability to work with the public.
- Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.
- Ability to manage a budget and billing process.
- Skill in word processing and computer operations.
- Thorough knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- Ability to make sound decisions.
Special Qualifications:
- Must be:
- AEMT or Paramedic certified with the State of Utah.
- Certified Firefighter I & II in the State of Utah.
- Certified Fire Officer I
- Fire Inspector I or Company Officer Inspector (within 1 Year of Hire)
- NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700a, and 800b Certifications.
- Must have a valid Utah State driver's license.
- Must meet physical fitness requirements as established by the fire department and city.
