GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision from the Lead Mechanic, performs the full range of skilled journey level repair and maintenance on a variety of both gas and diesel automotive and construction equipment.
Under general supervision from the Lead Mechanic, up-fit new equipment with lights, cameras, welders, air compressors, radios or other components.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform the full range of journey level mechanic duties associated with the preventive maintenance, repair and rebuilding of major and minor components, including mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems for a variety of gas and diesel vehicles and construction equipment.
Perform repairs on equipment in the field as needed; responds to needs for mechanical repairs on twenty-four hour basis.
Diagnose cause and make needed repairs of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems and determine parts required to make needed repairs. Perform basic heavy equipment, automotive maintenance functions including lubrication and oil changes.
Up-fit equipment with components for the unit. This includes fabricating and assembling brackets, hangers and wiring
Under general supervision maintain the fleet fueling system. This include the weekly, monthly and yearly logs reports required by the State of Utah for a Class B certification.
Must be a self starter with the ability to follow written and verbal instructions; be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; must work well with others and be a team player.
Perform mechanical maintenance and repair work on miscellaneous power equipment.
Perform arc and acetylene welding functions as needed to fabricate or repair parts.
Perform work using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools standard to the industry. Not limited to; hand, pneumatic tools, hydraulic, air conditioning and scanners, etc.
Inspect City vehicles for conformance with state regulations and issues state inspection sticker.
Responsible for diagnosis and repair of air conditioning systems.
Perform various welding and fabrications on city equipment and on special projects.
Perform repairs on equipment in the field as needed; responds to calls for mechanical repairs.
Maintains shop area, tools and equipment must be kept clean for the purpose of ensuring safety, availability and proper functioning of equipment and adhering to OSHA standards.
Must be willing attend continuing education classes to keep up with current trends.
Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player.
Perform related duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience: Graduation from a two (2) year technical college with a certificate in automotive mechanics and six years of experience as a mechanic servicing gas and diesel, automotive, construction equipment, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel mechanic practices, principles and techniques; working knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials and tools of the mechanical trade; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to equipment maintenance activities.
- Skill in the use of mechanical tools, materials, and testing equipment.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical defects and determine steps necessary to put equipment in proper operating condition.
- Special Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid "Class B" Utah Commercial Driver's license with required endorsements
- Maintain a current DOT Physical Card
- Possession of a valid certification by the State of Utah as a Vehicle To include: passenger car / light truck, motorcycle / ATV, Tractor / Trailer / Bus certificates.
- Possession of valid Class B certification by the State of Utah for an underground Storage Tank certification
- Possession of a valid forklift certification
