Landscape Construction Leadworker

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Parks Project Manager, performs a series of skilled duties related to landscape construction and maintenance of city properties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs and supervises skilled tasks associated with landscape construction and maintenance of parks, park strips, detention basins and other landscaped areas throughout Spanish Fork City.
Construction tasks include installation of landscapes including sprinkler systems, retaining walls, plant material, soil, sod, hydroseed and concrete work. Maintenance tasks include planting, fertilizing, pruning trees and shrubs, performing weed abatement and pest control, programming, troubleshooting, and repairing irrigation systems; mowing, watering, fertilizing, top dressing, and aerating lawn areas.
Operates various types of heavy equipment such as backhoes, trackhoes, skid steers trenchers tractors & trucks, and all types of small equipment, such as mowers, sod cutters, aerators, etc.
Performs and oversees the maintenance of equipment using basic maintenance skills such as checking and changing oil and oil filters, checking and maintaining air pressure in tires. Greasing equipment on a regular basis and performing other maintenance necessary for the operation of equipment..
Performs snow removal on sidewalks, trails and parking lots.
Supervises the efforts of part-time and full-time workers to accomplish department goals. Conducts employee performance evaluations. Hires seasonal /part-time employees. Reviews and approves subordinates time cards.
Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player.
Must live within 30 minutes' travel time from Spanish Fork's city limits in order to respond to emergencies.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education and Experience. High School diploma. Prefere an Associates degree in horticulture, or other related field and 4 years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape construction including 2 years supervisory experience. May substitute experience for some education.
- Necessary Skills and Knowledge. Strong emphasis on landscape construction. Must be able to read and follow plans. Must have knowledge about proper sprinkler installation and design. Must have significant knowledge about all aspects of landscape construction and applicable codes. Must have a good understanding of tree, plant, and turf care, including the application of fertilizer, herbicide, pesticides and fungicides. Must understand proper use and hazards of operating equipment; proper maintenance of equipment; Must be able to follow department policies and procedures; Basic skills in mechanics and use of hand tools and equipment. Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making recommendations. Ability to supervise other employees. Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers and subordinates. Must have basic spelling and grammar skills. Able to work within a budget. Basic computer skills. Must be able to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and calm manner at all times. Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Special Qualifications. Must have valid Utah Commercial Driver License (CDL) or must be able to obtain one within a time frame set forth by the city.
- Must have Utah State Pesticide Applicators License in Ornamental and Turf Category or pass exam within 1 year of hire date.

Requires constant eye/hand coordination with occasional foot/eye/hand coordination. Occasionally requires vision strain, rapid speed work, and extreme muscular exertion, along with finger, hand/arm, and foot/leg dexterity. Mental applications include constant memory for details and attention to many items. Occasionally requires the estimation of the size, quality, and quantity of objects, along with the speed of moving objects. Occasional discriminating thinking, rot/repetitive thinking, guided problem solving, creative problem solving, and memory for ideas, verbal and written directions.
