Wastewater Division

Pay Grade 7


Under the supervision of the Wastewater Division Manager, services, maintains and repairs the city wastewater treatment plant and collection system. A Senior Wastewater Operator I may be assigned responsibility for the following aspects of the wastewater system.

  • Collections Inventory
  • Collection System Cleaning
  • Treatment Plant Inventory
  • UDOT Permit Coordination

A Senior Wastewater Operator I may also be assigned responsibility for aspects of the wastewater system that can be assigned to a Wastewater Operator II, which include the following.

  • Building and Grounds
  • Manhole Inspection


Safety Systems. Responsible for monitoring and accurately recording readings for wastewater system gauges, meters and controls. Must keep legible records.

Oversees the placement of signs, barricades and other traffic control devices around work sites to protect employees and the public.

Equipment Operation. Operates and maintains wastewater facilities including equipment, controls, valves and pumps.

Performs visual inspection of wastewater processes and equipment.

Recognizes and reports changes in normal operations to the Senior Operator or Division Manager. Diagnoses and repairs problems with wastewater processes and equipment.

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy equipment including but not limited to the following:

  • Loaders
  • Backhoes and Trackhoes
  • Forklifts
  • Vactor Jet Trucks
  • Video Truck
  • Dump Trucks
  • Pumps
  • Blowers
  • Air Compressors
  • Jack Hammers
  • Saws
  • Grinders
  • Wrenches
  • Hammers
  • Shovels

Detects and reports mechanical problems with equipment to the Fleet Division.

Miscellaneous Duties as Assigned. Is responsible for the resolution of citizen requests/complaints related to wastewater. Must ensure that the Wastewater Division deals with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner in all circumstances.

Assists the Division Manager in requisitioning equipment, supplies and materials, and purchasing specifications.

Assists in the maintenance of the buildings and grounds.

Takes plant samples as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player.

Must live within 30 minutes' travel time from Spanish Fork's city limits in order to respond to emergencies.

Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.


Physical Demands. Requires moderate to heavy physical activity. Must be capable of moving over varied terrain, frequently climbing ladders, frequently stooping, bending and be capable of lifting 100 lbs.

Working Conditions. Exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, chemicals and fumes, and prolonged high noise levels. Often works in and around vehicular traffic. May at times include exposure to high stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances.

Hazards. Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. May be required to work unconventional work hours or shifts.


  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Four (4) years of related experience. Two (2) years experience as a Collections Class II or Treatment Class II Unrestricted Wastewater Operator.
  • CPR Certification: Required.
  • Utah CDL: Class A.
  • Flagging Certification: Required.
  • Forklift Certification: Required.
  • Traffic Control Technician Certification: Required.
  • Unrestricted Wastewater Collection: Class III.
  • Unrestricted Wastewater Treatment: Class III.
  • DRC Qualified: Must be able to act as Direct Responsible Charge (DRC) for the collection and treatment systems.
  • IS-100, IS-200, & IS-700 Certifications: Within one year of hire date.
  • Mandatory for applicant to work on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week within a rotated schedule. Applicant must be able to respond to emergencies in 20 minutes.
