Position:  Water Technician I

Department:  Public Works







Under the supervision of Water Division Foremen and the Water Division Manager, performs a variety of general maintenance, service and repair on the city drinking water and pressurized irrigation systems. 


Performs drinking water and pressurized irrigation installation and maintenance.  This includes but is not limited to:  work on pipes, meters, hydrants, fittings, valves, pumps, pump houses, wells, reservoirs and springs, telemetering, SCADA, snow plowing, flagging and vac/jet truck work. 

Places signs, barricades and other traffic control devises around work sites to protect employees and the public. 

Operates light, medium and heavy equipment such as:  loaders, backhoes, trackhoes, rollers, fork lifts, vac/jet trucks, dump trucks and other similar equipment.  Performs maintenance on assigned equipment.  Detects and reports mechanical problems with equipment to the Motor Pool Division. 

Uses hand and power tools such as: jack hammers, saws, grinders, air compressors, wrenches, weed trimmers, pruners, hammers, shovels and other similar equipment. 

Must be able to report to work on time as scheduled and abide by all city policies and procedures.  Must work well with others and be a team player.  Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.  Must be able to deal with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner in all circumstances. 

Perform other duties as assigned. 

Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test. 


Requires moderate to heavy physical activity.  Required to push, pull or lift medium to heavy weights. Required to work in difficult working positions.  May have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods 

Exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, chemicals and fumes, and prolonged high noise levels.  Often works in and around vehicular traffic.  May at times include exposure to high stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances. 

Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions.  May be required to work unconventional work hours or shifts. 


  1. Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent and 1 years' experience in related work including the operation of equipment.  May be required to obtain additional training and education in flagging, equipment operation, drinking water regulations, herbicide application, trenching, shoring, confined space, chlorine use or other related work. 
  1. Working knowledge of: drinking water and pressurized irrigation systems; related equipment, materials (pipe, fittings, etc.) and tool operation; and the safety rules for related equipment and tool operation and construction/maintenance work. 
  1. Ability to: work in all weather extremes in wet, muddy and icy conditions and perform manual tasks for sustained periods of time; perform minor/major equipment maintenance and repairs. 
  1. Special Qualifications: Must possess a valid Class B Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must obtain Water Distribution Class IV Unrestricted Certification within in 5 years of date of hire.
