*This is a full-time benefited position but is only anticipated to last for about 2-3 years or the duration of the Fiber-to-the-home buildout project.  Applicants should understand the temporary nature of the position, but also understand that during the duration of the position, employees will receive full benefits.


Working under the supervision of the Lead Cable Technician, performs under general guidelines, the installation and maintenance of the hybrid/fiber/coaxial system (HFC). 


Install, operate and maintain overhead and underground hybrid fiber coax (HFC) communication system. The system includes, but is not limited to, coaxial and fiber optics cable; enclosures; connectors; terminators; boxes (overhead and underground); and splicing. 

Install messenger cable, anchors and related hardware and equipment.  Install underground cable and boxes according to proper codes and standards. 

Read and update utility maps and follow build procedures to completion of jobs 

Prep, bond and install fiber cable in a variety of under-ground and/or aerial splice closures using fusion splice equipment. 

Use OTDR, TDR, voltage meter, RF signal meter, optical power meter, back reflection meter to perform pre and post installation tests and document fiber and coax splice loss for acceptable readings to meet plant and customer specs. Record and document all system readings for final test. 

Read and maintain splice matrix documentation. 

Operate heavy machinery like backhoe, bore machine, fork lift, ditch witch, trencher, mini-ex, bucket truck and jumping jack to dig trenches when running conduit and to refill the trench when finished. 

Install and connect underground conduit as needed. 

Install, terminate and troubleshoot coax in customer's homes, including digital boxes, cable modems and configuration of wireless routers. 

Troubleshoot phone wiring and RJ-45 wiring, fax machine and phone problems at customers homes and or businesses. 

Document and troubleshoot cable leakage (CLI) as per FCC guidelines. 

Professional positive attitude with good communication skills. 

Ability to work from drawings and specifications and use measuring and testing instruments as needed in the operation of HFC cable systems. 

Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player. 

Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test. 

Performs related duties as assigned. 


  • Education and Experience: High school degree and two (2) years experience as cable technician or cable installer. 
    • Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Thorough background of electrical theory and application.
    • Extensive knowledge in application of coaxial and optical fiber cabling, connectorizing, splicing, and related applications.
    • Skill in the operation of assigned equipment.
    • Skills in pole line construction and underground conduit routing and application.
    • Ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs.
    • Ability to deal with high stress situations. 
  • Special Qualifications:
    • Fiber Optic Certification preferred,
    • Fork Lift certification preferred,
    • Certification in cable installations and operations preferred.
